PRESS RELEASE
The Eco Guardians of Fiji in collaboration with various stakeholders including the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health organized a massive clean-up campaign in 14 communities across Lami last Saturday 26 April. The clean-up was in recognition of the increasing seriousness of the current dengue outbreak and the hot-spots identified in the Lami area. The campaign engaged around 300 youth volunteers across the 14 communities.
Assistant Minister to the Office of the Prime Minister, Honourable Sakiusa Tubuna said that the clean-up campaign was very successful. We managed to collect 400 bags of rubbish and cleared more than 100 drains that were blocked. This regular clean-up assisted in removing rubbish and destroy potential mosquito breeding sites. We expected that the number of dengue fever detected by the Lami Hospital to decline substantially in the coming weeks.
Hon. Tubuna also applauded the organization of the post clean-up campaign volleyball tournament at Tikaram Park in Lami which brought together the youths of Lami.
The engaged communities include Waikerekere, Wailekutu, Wainigasau, Bilo, Veisari, Kalekana, Naivikinikini, Qauia, Matata, Valenicina, Lami Koro, Suvavou, Nadonumai and Delainavesi.
