Leadership Continuity and Succession Planning within the People’s Alliance
The People’s Alliance (PA) has confirmed that its leader and current Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, will continue to lead the party until 2026. According to party secretary‑general Sila Balawa, Mr Rabuka has reaffirmed his commitment to guiding the party through this period while simultaneously preparing the next generation of leaders.
Mr Balawa explained that although Mr Rabuka remains firmly at the helm, he has openly encouraged younger Members of Parliament to step forward and ready themselves for future leadership roles. This includes the possibility of taking over both the party leadership and, potentially, the prime ministership. Such openness reflects Mr Rabuka’s long-term vision for a sustainable and resilient political organisation.
He further noted that the Prime Minister has strong confidence in his team and is actively mentoring potential successors. The expectation, Mr Balawa said, is that MPs must demonstrate performance, capability, and readiness if they wish to be considered for leadership positions after 2026. Ultimately, Mr Rabuka hopes to surround himself with individuals he can trust to carry the party forward when the time comes.
This approach highlights a deliberate and strategic effort within the People’s Alliance to balance continuity with renewal, ensuring that future leadership transitions are grounded in preparation, performance, and confidence.
