The people of Laucala Village gathered yesterday to celebrate the commissioning of their newly refurbished village hall and the completion of a vital water project, marking a significant milestone in community development and resilience.
Officiating at the ceremony, Honourable Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, Minister for Health and Medical Services, emphasized the importance of the refurbished hall, noting that the facility will serve multiple purposes as a community gathering place, dispensary, and evacuation center during times of crisis. “The Hall is a sanctuary for our community, and it represents what we can achieve when we come together. In times of crisis, it will provide a safe haven for our families, offering shelter and support when it matters most,” he said.
The renovation project, funded generously by the World Health Organization at a cost of approximately USD $12,000, included the replacement of old rusted roofing and installation of new guttering to improve rainwater collection efficiency. These upgrades not only address immediate community needs but also incorporate climate resilience measures to safeguard the village against future challenges.
Minister Lalabalavu expressed gratitude to the local Turaganikoro, Community Health Workers (Nasi ni koro), and the dedicated District Nurse from Naililili Nursing Station for their commitment in bringing the project to fruition. He urged residents to take ownership of the newly renovated hall and water project, encouraging them to care for the facilities and ensure they serve the community for generations to come.
The event, attended by villagers, health officials, and distinguished guests, was a celebration of partnership, resilience, and progress. The refurbished hall and water project now stand as symbols of hope and unity, reinforcing the Coalition Government’s commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure and empowering communities across Fiji.
