The celebration on Avea Island marked a historic milestone for the Yavusa Munia, who regained ownership of their 1,110-hectare ancestral land after 36 years. The land was returned under the Government’s Freehold Land Buyback Scheme, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiating at the handover ceremony. In his address, Mr. Rabuka emphasized that the restoration of land ownership symbolized not only the return of property but also the revival of identity, hope, and responsibility. He encouraged the landowners to use their land productively and sustainably, ensuring that economic development goes hand in hand with environmental protection.

Elder Etuate Uni reflected on the hardships endured by their forefathers when they were forced to leave Munia, describing the day as the fulfillment of their ancestors’ dreams. He expressed gratitude to the government and acknowledged the late former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase for his vision in initiating the Buyback Scheme, which gave renewed hope to the people.
