The Ministry of Fisheries team in the Central Division has completed a highly productive deployment in Natila Village, working side by side with the community to strengthen livelihoods and protect local marine resources.
Over several days, the team partnered with local farmers to harvest, clean, and maintain seaweed farms, producing an impressive 1,996.7 kilograms of wet seaweed — nearly two metric tonnes in total.
The harvest results highlight the power of teamwork and commitment:
- Day 1: 30 branch lines harvested — 411.1 kg
- Day 2: 54 lines cleared — 553.2 kg
- Final Day: 86 lines harvested — 1,032.4 kg
In total, 170 seaweed lines were successfully harvested. Alongside harvesting, the team carried out critical maintenance, cleaning seaweed lines to prevent pests and biofouling, and reinforcing underwater structures to ensure farms remain strong and productive for future cycles.
This initiative reflects the Ministry’s commitment to building resilience in rural and coastal communities by supporting aquaculture, enhancing food security, and creating sustainable sources of income.
The Ministry of Fisheries remains dedicated to working shoulder to shoulder with communities, ensuring that no one is left behind as Fiji moves forward with practical, sustainable solutions for a stronger future.
