Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has confirmed that the Government has handed over the findings of a bombshell audit into the $123.6 million Walesi project to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The audit, which raised serious concerns over spending, governance, and procurement, has been with FICAC for more than 12 months, yet no charges have been announced.
Earlier reports revealed that approximately $80 million of the funds allocated between 2015 and 2022 were mismanaged or wasted, sparking public concern over accountability and transparency. Mr. Kamikamica emphasized that the Government cannot interfere with FICAC’s work, stressing that the next move rests entirely with the commission.
The Walesi audit underscores the importance of strong governance and oversight in public projects. While the Government has fulfilled its responsibility by submitting the findings, the responsibility for further action now lies with FICAC. The case highlights the broader need for accountability in the use of public funds and the protection of taxpayer interests.
