Building Resilient Communities: New Homes for Families in Malakati Village

The Coalition Government, through the Ministry of Rural, Maritime and Disaster Management, has delivered new homes to seven families in Malakati Village, Nacula District, Yasawa, under the Rural Housing Assistance Programme.

The Yasawa group, often exposed to cyclones and strong winds, has long faced challenges with housing durability. The recipients of these new engineer‑certified houses expressed confidence that their homes will now withstand future cyclones, unlike in the past when strong winds shook their houses and blew roofs away.

This project was made possible through a strong partnership between the Government and the Malakati community. Villagers contributed $84,524.90, while the Government covered the remaining two‑thirds of the cost, amounting to $254,773.74.

The initiative reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to building safer, more resilient communities across Fiji. By investing in cyclone‑resilient housing, the Government is ensuring that families in vulnerable areas can live with dignity, security, and peace of mind.
