Hon. Alitia Bainivalu has confirmed in Parliament that Fiji currently operates 24 ice plants across the country, providing vital support to fishers in maintaining the freshness and quality of their catch. These facilities are located in:
Central (2): Wainibokasi, Navua
Western (5): Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, Rakiraki, Namarai
Northern (8): Kubulau, Nabouwalu, Lekutu, Labasa, Wainikoro, Savusavu, Rabi, Taveuni
Eastern (9): Vunisea, Kavala, Gau, Lakeba, Vanuabalavu, Moala, Levuka, Rotuma, Cicia
These ice plants play a critical role in strengthening livelihoods by helping fishers preserve their catch, maintain quality standards, and improve income opportunities.
Upgrades Underway
The Government is working in partnership with Japan and the Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Foundation (OFCF) to modernise existing facilities:
Taveuni: Ice machine replacement under OFCF (Phase 8).
Labasa: Installation of three new ice machines under Japan’s Economic & Social Development Programme (ESDP).
New Ice Plants Coming Soon
To further extend services to rural and maritime communities, new projects are being rolled out:
Koro Island – $620,000 project
Construction of a new ice plant, Fisheries Service Centre, and staff quarters at Navaga.
Cawaro, Udu – $340,000 project
Development of a new Fisheries Station and ice plant, with groundwork already underway including water dam, site leveling, and road access.
Navatu, Cakaudrove – $56,250 preparatory works
Establishment of a new station and ice plant to support communities across Natewa Bay, including Navatu, Naweni, Koroalau, Natewa, and Vaturova.
Hon. Bainivalu emphasized that these initiatives reflect the Coalition Government’s clear focus on strengthening fisheries infrastructure, improving livelihoods, and creating better opportunities for fishers in rural and maritime regions.
