Government and Community Partners Launch Fiji’s First Gymnosperm Forest Park in Sawani, Naitasiri

The Naduruvatu Gymnosperm Forest Park was officially opened in Sawani, Naitasiri, marking a historic milestone in Fiji’s conservation journey. For more than 99 years, the land of the Mataqali Naduruvatu was managed as a Forest Reserve. When the lease expired in 2023, the landowners made a bold decision to preserve their forest rather than pursue short-term commercial development.

This visionary step has created Fiji’s first Gymnosperm Forest Park, safeguarding ancient tree species such as Dakua, the treasured Lewa Dakua of the Vanua o Vuna. By protecting this forest, the Mataqali Naduruvatu are preserving biodiversity, safeguarding cultural identity, and opening new opportunities through eco-tourism.

The initiative was made possible through strong partnerships:

  • Mataqali Naduruvatu – for their vision and leadership.
  • Asian Development Bank (SAFER Programme) – for financial literacy and business training.
  • St John Association of Fiji – for first aid training for community members.
  • Ministry of Forestry – for technical support in developing the park.

The park supports Fiji’s commitment to the global 30×30 target to protect 30 percent of land and oceans by 2030 and aligns with the Forestry Act 2025, which strengthens the role of indigenous landowners in sustainable forest management.

Speaking at the opening, it was emphasized that the park is a legacy for the youth of Naduruvatu and Naitasiri. They were encouraged to protect it, take pride in it, and build on the vision of their elders.

The Government commends the Mataqali Naduruvatu for their leadership and commitment to keeping their forest standing for generations to come. This landmark project demonstrates how indigenous stewardship, community partnerships, and national policy can work together to achieve sustainable development and environmental resilience
