This is a promising step toward revitalizing Fiji’s sugar industry and empowering rural livelihoods. The New Farmers/Lease Premium Grant Program is designed to remove one of the most persistent barriers to agricultural development—land security. By supporting both new and existing sugarcane farmers with lease acquisition and renewal costs, the government is not only encouraging generational continuity in farming but also enabling expansion and modernization.
For the 2024–2025 financial year, the program has been allocated $1 million, with 64 farmers benefiting so far. The grant covers up to 30% of lease costs or a maximum of $7,500, whichever is lower. This targeted support is especially critical in regions where land tenure uncertainty has historically discouraged investment in long-term agricultural productivity.
Minister Charan Jeath Singh emphasized that this initiative is about more than just financial aid—it’s about securing the future of Fiji’s sugar sector through inclusive, sustainable development.
